Why do I get Unknown user name or bad password (1326, error 5)?

Symptom

You see one of the following error when signing into your host computer:

Error (login): Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. ({1326/5])

or

Login failed. Enter the [Windows/Mac] user name and password you see when physically sitting at the remote computer.

Potential Causes

Make sure you are using the correct user name and password
Remember not to use the same information you use to log in to LogMeIn.com or LogMeIn apps.

Which user name and password do you need? 
Enter the user name and password you would normally enter when you see your Windows or Mac logon screen, as shown in this sample:

If you don't know your user name...
 
Retrieve Your User Name on a Windows PC 
  1. Physically go to the computer that you want to be able to access, or ask someone who is present at that computer to perform the following steps. 
  2. On the host, open the Run window. Here's how:
    1. On Windows XP, go to Start > Run.
    2. On Windows 7 and Vista, go to Start and type run in the Search field. Open the program called Run.
  3. Type control userpasswords2 and click OK. The User Accounts window is displayed.
  4. Any user in the Administrators group can be used to log in to the computer.
Retrieve Your User Name on a Mac
  1. Physically go to the computer that you want to be able to access, or ask someone who is present at that computer to perform the following steps. 
  2. Click the Apple menu and go to System Preferences > Users & Groups.
  3. Any user in the Administrators group can be used to log in to the computer.
